In the 19th century, Essaouira was Morocco’s biggest port, known as the ‘Port of Timbuktu’ as goods like gold and spices was coming by caravan from sub-Saharan Africa to be shipped from here out to America and Europe. Walk to the fishing port where the sailors bring their daily catch and have lunch in a restaurant to taste delicious fresh fish and seafood.
In the area of Essaouira, argan trees grow, from which the expensive Argan oil comes out. It is not only the Atlantic Sea and the walled city that have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is also the famous Gnaoua Festival (Gnaoua Musiques du Monde), which attracts thousands of visitors every year at the end of June. For three to four days, Essaouira is filled with people, colors and music.
