Mhamid is an oasis town in southern Morocco, before the vast expanses of the Sahara desert. It is located at the end of the N9 road, about 24 kilometres from the Algerian border. M’hamid is sheltered in a palm grove stretching for 16 km along the river Draa. An ancient cultural crossroads, its territory used to be a stop for trans-Saharan traders. Mhamid is part of a nomadic area and the main departure point for Sahara desert excursions, particularly to the dunes of Erg Chigaga and Erg Lehoudi.

60 km south west of MHamid are the dramatic dunes of Erg Chigaga. An epic sandscape where takes your breath away. With a length of 40 km, 15 km width and 300m high, is the largest and wildest desert of Morocco. From M’Hamid, for visiting this desert, is advisable the presence of a professional local guide. Starting from the oasis of M’Hamid it is possibile to reach the dunes area, by 4×4 Off-road vehicle. This journey through these desert landscapes takes approximately 2 hours. The enthusiasts of nature and of slowness will prefer the ride on a dromedary’s back. Such a trip lasts from a few hours to several days. Due to its relatively difficult access, it remains less touristic than the Erg Chebbi, its small cousin but this is the reason also for keeping a wild and authentic beauty.

The Erg Lehoudi only 12 km north of M’Hamid is easily accessible. Its forms continually change with the strong Saharan winds. Overnight in a bivouac camp is a “must” after a ride on a back of a dromedary.
